Dermal Filler Injections

Dermal fillers are substances injected into the skin on the face to improve its appearance. They have been used since about 1976. There are several different types of dermal filler. Some are derived from collagen extracted from porcine or bovine sources. Others are produced synthetically from a substance called hyaluronic acid.

What are they used for?

Dermal fillers are used to soften the lines and contours on the face and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance produced by the body. The amount of hyaluronic acid produced by the body decreases with age leading to thinning and dryness of the skin. This leads to the appearance of wrinkles. The injection of dermal fillers into the skin replaces the hyaluronic acid which has become depleted and plumps up the skin.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment with dermal fillers will take about 30 minutes and the effects will be immediately seen.

What are the possible side-effects?

Dermal fillers are very safe substances to use. There is a very small risk of having an allergic reaction to the filler, or suffering some bruising or nodule formation around the injection sites. The area treated may be red for a short time following treatment. There may be some swelling and tenderness in the area treated for 24 hours and the client should avoid hot drinks, alcohol and the sun.
