Skin Rejuvenation

During the course of our lives, we are exposed to sunlight, harsh weather, pollution and even cigarette smoke, which combined with the ageing process, eventually leads to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. The skin eventually loses its youthful elasticity and becomes pockmarked and saggy. Age spots and thread veins often appear. Not all is lost though as the skin can be rejuvenated, using IPL treatment. The skin will look plumper, brighter, firmer and fresher, with a noticeable loss of sun spots and pigmented lesions. The IPL works by flashing a very bright light into the skin, the light energy being converted to heat energy. This heats the underlying tissues, and causes rejuvenation of the collagen, the protein responsible for giving skin its firmness.

Procedure

A special cooling gel is applied to the area to be treated, you are given protective glasses to wear, and the operator smoothly applies the IPL head over the area to be treated. The IPL or laser heats up the layers of skin where the collagen and elastin fibres live, and causes them to re-grow as firmer, more robust tissues. The whole treatment for a face can take about half an hour. Most people are able to return to normal activities such as work after about half an hour, although it should be pointed out that there will be a little redness.

Side Effects

There is a slight stinging as the light from the IPL hits the skin. Soothing creams can be applied to help with this. There is often some redness and heat afterwards, but this wears off rapidly, and there is very minimal “down time”. Some clients will report that it feels as though they have had a full facial.

How many treatments will I need?

This very much depends upon the extent and severity of the area to be treated. Some people will require just two or three treatments, but often up to 6 are needed. As the treatments progress you should notice a tightening of the skin, which has a more youthful and radiant appearance. There will be an evening out of the colour of the skin, with a loss of age or sun spots. The skin generally will look brighter and fresher.
